Semax
Synthetic heptapeptide, Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro.
Semax FAQ
What is Semax?
Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide, Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro. It is based on ACTH(4-7), a fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone, extended with a Pro-Gly-Pro tail that slows its breakdown. It was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Selank vs. Semax
Both are synthetic heptapeptides developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and both end in the same Pro-Gly-Pro tail that slows enzymatic breakdown. They come from different parent peptides: Selank (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro) extends tuftsin, an immunoglobulin fragment, while Semax (Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro) extends the ACTH(4-7) fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone.
Why aren't Selank and Semax FDA approved?
Both were developed and registered in Russia, and no sponsor has taken either through the U.S. clinical-trial and New Drug Application process that FDA approval requires. In the United States they are research compounds only.
What has Semax been studied for in research?
Published research on Semax has been mainly preclinical, in rodent and cell models, examining BDNF expression, melanocortin signaling, cognition and attention tasks, and models of cerebral ischemia. It is registered as a medicine in Russia, where clinical studies have included people after stroke. Findings in cells or animals do not establish effects in people.
Why was Semax developed?
Semax was developed in the 1980s at the Institute of Molecular Genetics in Moscow as a stable analogue of ACTH(4-7), a fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone that had attracted interest in neuroscience research. The aim was a fragment that lacks ACTH's hormonal action on the adrenal glands and resists rapid breakdown, which is why a Pro-Gly-Pro tail was added to the Met-Glu-His-Phe core.
Is Semax legal or banned in the US?
Semax is not banned in the United States, but it is not FDA approved and is not listed as a federally controlled substance. It can be bought as a research chemical for laboratory use; selling it for human consumption or marketing it with health claims is unlawful. Sports bodies may prohibit unapproved substances, so check the current WADA list. This is general information, not legal advice.
What are the identifiers for Semax?
Semax: molecular formula C37H51N9O10S; molecular weight 813.92 g/mol; CAS number 80714-61-0. Sequence: Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro (MEHFPGP). Match these identifiers against the Certificate of Analysis for the lot.
Does Semax come with a Certificate of Analysis?
Yes. Each lot has its own Certificate of Analysis, linked on this page for the current lot of each size: 5mg (99.73% HPLC purity); 10mg (99.5% HPLC purity). Past certificates are archived in the COA library; contact us with the lot number on the vial label if a certificate is missing.
What purity is Semax?
99.5% (HPLC, current lot). Purity is measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and reported on the lot's Certificate of Analysis.
What sizes of Semax are available?
Semax is supplied as lyophilized powder in a sealed vial in 2 sizes: 5mg, 10mg. In stock and dispatched in 1–2 business days. Quantity pricing applies automatically at 5+ and 10+ vials of the same size.
How should Semax be stored?
Store sealed at −20 °C, dry and protected from light.
