Oxytocin Acetate FAQ
Selank vs. oxytocin: what's the difference?
They are unrelated peptides. Selank is a synthetic linear heptapeptide (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro) built from tuftsin, with no single defined receptor. Oxytocin is a naturally occurring cyclic nonapeptide hormone, held in a ring by a disulfide bond, that acts on the oxytocin receptor (OXTR). Oxytocin is also an FDA-approved active ingredient; Selank is not approved in the United States.
PT-141 vs. oxytocin: what's the difference?
They are different peptides acting on different receptor systems. PT-141 is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide that binds melanocortin receptors, chiefly MC3R and MC4R. Oxytocin is a naturally occurring nonapeptide hormone, cyclized by a disulfide bond, that acts on the oxytocin receptor (OXTR). Both are FDA-approved active ingredients; the materials sold here are research reagents.
What is oxytocin peptide?
Oxytocin is a nine-amino-acid peptide hormone, Cys-Tyr-Ile-Gln-Asn-Cys-Pro-Leu-Gly-NH2, made in the hypothalamus and released from the posterior pituitary. A disulfide bond between its two cysteines forms a six-residue ring. It was the first peptide hormone to be sequenced and synthesized, by Vincent du Vigneaud, work recognized with the 1955 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. It acts on the oxytocin receptor (OXTR).
Is oxytocin a peptide hormone?
Yes. Oxytocin is a classic peptide hormone: a short chain of nine amino acids produced by neurons in the hypothalamus and released into the circulation from the posterior pituitary. It also acts as a neuropeptide signal within the brain. It is closely related to vasopressin, which differs at only two of its nine positions.
Oxytocin acetate vs. oxytocin: what's the difference?
Oxytocin acetate is oxytocin supplied as its acetate salt. Synthetic peptides are purified and freeze-dried with a counter-ion, and acetate is a common choice. The peptide itself is identical; the salt adds weight, so the net peptide content of a vial is somewhat lower than the total powder mass. Mass spectrometry on the Certificate of Analysis confirms the oxytocin molecule.
Is oxytocin FDA approved?
Yes, as an active ingredient. Oxytocin is an FDA-approved active ingredient in prescription medicines used in hospital settings. The oxytocin acetate sold here is a research reagent, not that medicine, and is not manufactured, labeled or approved for human or veterinary use.
What has oxytocin been studied for in research?
Oxytocin is one of the most studied neuropeptides. Research has examined the oxytocin receptor in uterine and mammary tissue, and in rodent models, including prairie voles, its role in social bonding and maternal behavior. It has also been examined in many human clinical studies in social-cognition and psychiatric research. Findings in cells or animals do not establish effects in people.
Does oxytocin peptide need to be refrigerated?
Yes. Keep sealed lyophilized oxytocin refrigerated at 2–8 °C, or frozen at −20 °C for long-term storage, away from light. Its disulfide bond and asparagine and glutamine residues make it sensitive to heat in solution, so keep reconstituted material refrigerated and avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
What are the identifiers for Oxytocin Acetate?
Oxytocin Acetate: molecular formula C43H66N12O12S2 (free base); molecular weight 1007.19 g/mol (free base; higher as acetate salt); CAS number 50-56-6 (oxytocin); 6233-83-6 (acetate salt). Sequence: Cys-Tyr-Ile-Gln-Asn-Cys-Pro-Leu-Gly-NH2 (disulfide bridge Cys1-Cys6). Match these identifiers against the Certificate of Analysis for the lot.
Does Oxytocin Acetate come with a Certificate of Analysis?
Yes. Each lot has its own Certificate of Analysis, linked on this page for the current lot of each size: 5mg (99.11% HPLC purity); 10mg (99.78% HPLC purity). Past certificates are archived in the COA library; contact us with the lot number on the vial label if a certificate is missing.
What purity is Oxytocin Acetate?
99.11% (HPLC, current lot). Purity is measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and reported on the lot's Certificate of Analysis.
What sizes of Oxytocin Acetate are available?
Oxytocin Acetate is supplied as lyophilized powder in a sealed vial in 2 sizes: 5mg, 10mg. In stock and dispatched in 1–2 business days. Quantity pricing applies automatically at 5+ and 10+ vials of the same size.
How should Oxytocin Acetate be stored?
Store sealed at −20 °C, dry and protected from light.
