Ipamorelin FAQ

What is ipamorelin?

Ipamorelin is a synthetic pentapeptide (Aib-His-D-2-Nal-D-Phe-Lys-NH2) that acts on the ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a). It was developed by Novo Nordisk in the 1990s and is characterized in published studies as a selective growth-hormone secretagogue.

Is ipamorelin FDA approved?

No. Ipamorelin was investigated in clinical trials but has never been approved by the FDA or any other major regulator. It is a research compound.

Tesamorelin vs. ipamorelin vs. sermorelin

Tesamorelin and sermorelin act on the growth-hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) receptor; ipamorelin acts on a different receptor, the ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a). Sermorelin is the 29-amino-acid active fragment of human GHRH. Tesamorelin is the full 44-amino-acid GHRH sequence with an added trans-3-hexenoyl group that stabilizes it. Ipamorelin is a much smaller synthetic pentapeptide, Aib-His-D-2-Nal-D-Phe-Lys-NH2.

Hexarelin vs. ipamorelin

Both are synthetic ghrelin-receptor (GHS-R1a) agonists. Hexarelin is a hexapeptide derived from GHRP-6 with a 2-methyl-D-tryptophan, and it also binds the CD36 receptor, which has made it a subject of cardiovascular research. Ipamorelin is a pentapeptide characterized in published studies as more selective for the ghrelin receptor. Neither is FDA approved.

Are peptides like ipamorelin, sermorelin and CJC-1295 the same as HGH?

No. HGH is the 191-amino-acid growth hormone itself. Ipamorelin, GHRP-6, hexarelin, sermorelin, CJC-1295 and tesamorelin are much smaller synthetic peptides, called growth hormone secretagogues, that act on pituitary receptors controlling the body's own release of growth hormone: the ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a) or the GHRH receptor. None of them contains the growth hormone sequence.

Is tesamorelin or ipamorelin a GLP-1?

No. GLP-1 receptor agonists such as semaglutide act on the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor. Tesamorelin acts on the GHRH receptor, and ipamorelin acts on the ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a). They are unrelated in sequence and target, although all three are peptides and are sometimes discussed together online.

Why are tesamorelin and ipamorelin studied together?

Because they act on two different receptors that both regulate growth hormone release from the pituitary. Tesamorelin is a GHRH analogue acting on the GHRH receptor; ipamorelin acts on the ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a). Researchers studying how these two signaling pathways interact sometimes compare the compounds alone and together. No combination of the two is an approved product, and they are supplied here as separate vials.

CJC-1295/ipamorelin vs. sermorelin vs. tesamorelin

Sermorelin, CJC-1295 and tesamorelin are all GHRH analogues acting on the GHRH receptor: sermorelin is the native 29-amino-acid fragment, CJC-1295 (no DAC) is that fragment with four stabilizing substitutions, and tesamorelin is the full 44-residue sequence with an N-terminal hexenoyl group. The CJC-1295/ipamorelin blend adds a second compound, ipamorelin, which acts on a different receptor, the ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a).

CJC-1295 vs. ipamorelin: are they the same?

No. CJC-1295 is a 29-residue GHRH analogue that acts on the GHRH receptor; the DAC version adds an albumin-binding linker. Ipamorelin is a 5-amino-acid peptide that acts on a different receptor, the ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a). The two are unrelated in sequence, which is why they are often supplied together: they act on the two separate receptor pathways that regulate pituitary growth hormone release.

MK-677 (ibutamoren) vs. ipamorelin, GHRP-6 and CJC-1295

MK-677 (ibutamoren) is not a peptide: it is a small-molecule ghrelin-receptor agonist developed by Merck in the 1990s. Ipamorelin and GHRP-6 are peptides that act on that same ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a), while CJC-1295 acts on a different one, the GHRH receptor. None of these is FDA approved. We do not sell MK-677.

Why are CJC-1295 and ipamorelin supplied together?

Because they act on complementary receptor targets. Pituitary growth hormone release is regulated by two separate receptor pathways: the GHRH receptor, targeted by CJC-1295, and the ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a), targeted by ipamorelin. Researchers studying how the two pathways interact often use one compound from each class, so a co-lyophilized vial offers both in a fixed ratio. A blend is a convenience format, not an approved product.

CJC-1295/ipamorelin blend vs. separate vials

The blend fixes a 1:1 mass ratio (5 mg + 5 mg) in one vial, which saves a reconstitution step and keeps the ratio identical across experiments. Separate vials let a researcher vary each peptide independently, run single-compound controls, and switch between CJC-1295 with or without DAC. Choose separate vials when the experiment needs either compound on its own.

What has ipamorelin been studied for in research?

Ipamorelin was characterized by Novo Nordisk in the late 1990s as a selective ghrelin-receptor (GHS-R1a) agonist, in pituitary cell and rodent studies comparing it with other growth hormone secretagogues. It later entered human clinical trials, including trials in people recovering from bowel surgery, but development did not continue to approval. Findings in cells or animals do not establish effects in people.

Is ipamorelin a growth hormone?

No. Ipamorelin is a 5-amino-acid synthetic peptide (Aib-His-D-2-Nal-D-Phe-Lys-NH2), classed as a growth hormone secretagogue because it acts on the ghrelin receptor, one of the pituitary receptors that regulate growth hormone release. Growth hormone (HGH) itself is a 191-amino-acid protein. Ipamorelin contains none of its sequence.

Why is ipamorelin banned?

Ipamorelin is not banned from laboratory sale. The term usually refers to sport: the World Anti-Doping Agency names ipamorelin among the growth hormone secretagogues in class S2 of its Prohibited List, banned at all times, because it is not approved for human therapeutic use and is considered capable of enhancing performance. It is also not an FDA-approved drug, so it cannot lawfully be sold for human use.

Why isn't ipamorelin FDA approved?

FDA approval requires a sponsor to complete clinical trials for a specific use and then file a New Drug Application. Ipamorelin entered clinical trials, but no sponsor carried it through late-stage trials and an application, so it was never approved. In the United States it remains a research compound.

Is ipamorelin legal?

In the United States, ipamorelin is not a controlled substance and can be lawfully purchased as a research chemical for laboratory use. It is not an approved drug, so selling it for human use or with health claims is unlawful. It is prohibited in sport under WADA class S2. Laws differ by country. This is general information, not legal advice.

GHRP-6 vs. ipamorelin: are they the same?

No, although both are synthetic ghrelin-receptor (GHS-R1a) agonists. GHRP-6 is a hexapeptide (His-D-Trp-Ala-Trp-D-Phe-Lys-NH2) from the first generation of growth-hormone-releasing peptides in the 1980s. Ipamorelin is a later pentapeptide (Aib-His-D-2-Nal-D-Phe-Lys-NH2) designed in the 1990s and characterized in published studies as more receptor-selective. Neither is FDA approved.

How do you reconstitute ipamorelin in the lab?

Ipamorelin is a small, water-soluble peptide. Let the sealed vial reach room temperature, add sterile diluent slowly down the inside wall, and swirl gently until clear; do not shake. The concentration is the labeled mass (for example 5 mg or 10 mg) divided by the volume of diluent added. Label the vial with the date and concentration and keep it refrigerated.

Does ipamorelin need to be refrigerated?

For storage, yes. Lyophilized ipamorelin tolerates room temperature for short periods such as shipping, but keeps best at 2–8 °C, or frozen at −20 °C for long-term storage. Once reconstituted, keep it refrigerated, avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles and use it within the window on the label or Certificate of Analysis.

Is Epitalon a growth hormone? (Epithalon vs. ipamorelin)

No. Epitalon (also spelled Epithalon) is a synthetic tetrapeptide, Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly, developed in Russia by Vladimir Khavinson's group and based on a pineal gland extract; it is studied in aging research. Ipamorelin is a pentapeptide that acts on the ghrelin receptor. Neither is a growth hormone, which is a 191-amino-acid protein, and they are unrelated to each other.

IGF-1 LR3 vs. CJC-1295, ipamorelin, sermorelin or tesamorelin

They sit at different points of the growth hormone axis. CJC-1295, sermorelin and tesamorelin (GHRH receptor) and ipamorelin, GHRP-6 and hexarelin (ghrelin receptor) are small peptides that act on pituitary receptors controlling growth hormone release. IGF-1 LR3 acts further downstream: it is an analogue of IGF-1, the hormone produced largely in response to growth hormone, and binds the IGF-1 receptor directly.
