GHRP-6 FAQ

GHRP-6 vs. GHRP-2

Both are synthetic hexapeptide agonists of the ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a) from the same growth-hormone-releasing peptide family. They differ in sequence: GHRP-6 is His-D-Trp-Ala-Trp-D-Phe-Lys-NH2, while GHRP-2 (pralmorelin) is D-Ala-D-2-Nal-Ala-Trp-D-Phe-Lys-NH2. GHRP-2 is approved in Japan as a diagnostic agent; neither is FDA approved.

Are peptides like ipamorelin, sermorelin and CJC-1295 the same as HGH?

No. HGH is the 191-amino-acid growth hormone itself. Ipamorelin, GHRP-6, hexarelin, sermorelin, CJC-1295 and tesamorelin are much smaller synthetic peptides, called growth hormone secretagogues, that act on pituitary receptors controlling the body's own release of growth hormone: the ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a) or the GHRH receptor. None of them contains the growth hormone sequence.

What does "acetate" mean in sermorelin acetate, GHRP-6 acetate or hexarelin acetate?

It names the counter-ion. Peptides with basic groups, such as lysine, arginine, histidine and the N-terminus, carry positive charges that are balanced by negative ions. After purification, many peptides are converted to the acetate salt, which is preferred in research over the trifluoroacetate left by HPLC. The counter-ion adds weight, so the net peptide content of a vial is somewhat lower than the gross powder weight.

MK-677 (ibutamoren) vs. ipamorelin, GHRP-6 and CJC-1295

MK-677 (ibutamoren) is not a peptide: it is a small-molecule ghrelin-receptor agonist developed by Merck in the 1990s. Ipamorelin and GHRP-6 are peptides that act on that same ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a), while CJC-1295 acts on a different one, the GHRH receptor. None of these is FDA approved. We do not sell MK-677.

GHRP-6 vs. ipamorelin: are they the same?

No, although both are synthetic ghrelin-receptor (GHS-R1a) agonists. GHRP-6 is a hexapeptide (His-D-Trp-Ala-Trp-D-Phe-Lys-NH2) from the first generation of growth-hormone-releasing peptides in the 1980s. Ipamorelin is a later pentapeptide (Aib-His-D-2-Nal-D-Phe-Lys-NH2) designed in the 1990s and characterized in published studies as more receptor-selective. Neither is FDA approved.

What is GHRP-6?

GHRP-6 (growth hormone releasing peptide-6) is a synthetic hexapeptide, His-D-Trp-Ala-Trp-D-Phe-Lys-NH2. It was developed in the early 1980s by Cyril Bowers and colleagues, who derived it from analogues of the opioid peptide met-enkephalin. It was later found to act on the ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a), which was identified in 1996. It is not FDA approved.

What has GHRP-6 been studied for in research?

GHRP-6 was the prototype compound for the growth-hormone-releasing peptide class and its activity prompted the search for the ghrelin receptor, which was cloned in 1996 before ghrelin itself was found in 1999. Research has used it in pituitary cell and rodent models of growth hormone secretion, appetite signaling and ghrelin-receptor pharmacology, and in early human pharmacology studies. Findings in cells or animals do not establish effects in people.

Is GHRP-6 FDA approved?

No. GHRP-6 has never been approved by the FDA or by any other major regulator; it remains a research compound, sold here for laboratory research use only. A related peptide, GHRP-2 (pralmorelin), is approved in Japan as a diagnostic agent, but not in the United States.

Is GHRP-6 a natural peptide?

It is a peptide, but not a natural one. GHRP-6 is entirely synthetic: its sequence contains two D-amino acids (D-tryptophan and D-phenylalanine) and a C-terminal amide, and it was designed in the laboratory rather than isolated from the body. The natural hormone that acts on the same receptor is ghrelin, a 28-amino-acid acylated peptide discovered in 1999.

Is GHRP-6 a growth hormone?

No. GHRP-6 is a 6-amino-acid synthetic peptide that acts on the ghrelin receptor, one of the pituitary receptors that regulate growth hormone release. HGH is the 191-amino-acid growth hormone protein itself. Despite the similar names, GHRP-6 contains no part of the growth hormone sequence.

How do you reconstitute (mix) GHRP-6 in the lab?

GHRP-6 is a small peptide that dissolves readily in water-based diluents. Let the sealed vial reach room temperature, add sterile diluent slowly down the inside wall, and swirl gently until clear; do not shake. The concentration is the labeled mass (for example 5 mg) divided by the volume of diluent added. Label the vial with the date and concentration and keep it refrigerated.

Is GHRP-6 legal?

In the United States, GHRP-6 is not a controlled substance and can be lawfully purchased as a research chemical for laboratory use. It is not an approved drug, so selling it for human use or with health claims is unlawful. The World Anti-Doping Agency names GHRP-6 among the growth-hormone-releasing peptides in class S2, prohibited in sport at all times. This is general information, not legal advice.

GHRPs (GHRP-6, hexarelin) vs. GHRH analogues (CJC-1295, sermorelin, tesamorelin)

They act on different receptors. GHRP-6, GHRP-2 and hexarelin are small synthetic hexapeptides that act on the ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a). CJC-1295, sermorelin and tesamorelin are much longer analogues of growth-hormone-releasing hormone, 29 to 44 amino acids, that act on the GHRH receptor. Both receptors are on pituitary cells and regulate growth hormone release through separate signaling pathways.

Is hexarelin a GHRP? (Hexarelin vs. GHRP-6)

Yes. Hexarelin is a synthetic hexapeptide in the growth-hormone-releasing peptide (GHRP) family, made by modifying GHRP-6. The only difference is at position 2: hexarelin has 2-methyl-D-tryptophan where GHRP-6 has D-tryptophan, a change made to resist breakdown. Both act on the ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a); hexarelin also binds CD36.

IGF-1 LR3 vs. CJC-1295, ipamorelin, sermorelin or tesamorelin

They sit at different points of the growth hormone axis. CJC-1295, sermorelin and tesamorelin (GHRH receptor) and ipamorelin, GHRP-6 and hexarelin (ghrelin receptor) are small peptides that act on pituitary receptors controlling growth hormone release. IGF-1 LR3 acts further downstream: it is an analogue of IGF-1, the hormone produced largely in response to growth hormone, and binds the IGF-1 receptor directly.
