Heterodimeric glycoprotein; 92-residue α subunit and 145-residue β subunit.
HCG FAQ
HCG vs. HGH: what is the difference?
They are unrelated hormones that are often confused because of their initials. HGH (human growth hormone) is a single-chain, 191-amino-acid pituitary protein that acts on the growth hormone receptor. HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is a glycoprotein made of two subunits, a 92-residue α chain and a 145-residue β chain, produced mainly by the placenta; it acts on the LH/hCG receptor. Both are sold here as research reagents.
Kisspeptin-10 vs. HCG: what's the difference?
They are very different molecules acting at different points in the reproductive hormone axis. Kisspeptin-10 is a ten-amino-acid peptide that acts on the kisspeptin receptor (KISS1R) in the hypothalamus, upstream of gonadotropin-releasing hormone. HCG is a large glycoprotein hormone of two protein subunits plus sugar chains that acts directly on the LH/CG receptor in the gonads. HCG is an FDA-approved active ingredient; kisspeptin-10 is not.
What is HCG?
HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is a glycoprotein hormone made by the placenta. It has two subunits: an α subunit of 92 amino acids, shared with LH, FSH and TSH, and a hormone-specific β subunit of 145 amino acids, both carrying sugar chains. It acts on the luteinizing hormone/choriogonadotropin receptor (LHCGR). The material sold here is a research reagent, not a medicine.
Is HCG a peptide or a hormone?
HCG is a hormone, and structurally it is a glycoprotein rather than a simple peptide. It is made of two protein chains (92 and 145 amino acids) held together without a covalent bond, with carbohydrate making up roughly a third of its mass. Because its chains are far longer than the roughly 50 residues usually called peptides, it is classed as a protein hormone, though it is often sold alongside peptides.
Is HCG FDA approved?
Yes, as an active ingredient. Chorionic gonadotropin has long been an FDA-approved active ingredient in prescription medicines. The HCG sold here is a research reagent, supplied for laboratory use only; it is not manufactured, labeled or approved for human or veterinary use.
What has HCG been studied for in research?
HCG is a long-standing laboratory reagent in reproductive biology. Research has examined LH/CG receptor signaling in cell lines and in ovarian, testicular and placental cells, glycoprotein-hormone structure and glycosylation, and placental and trophoblast biology. It is also used as a reference standard in immunoassay development. Findings in cells or animals do not establish effects in people.
HCG vs. HMG: what's the difference?
HCG is a single glycoprotein hormone that acts on the LH/CG receptor. HMG (human menopausal gonadotropin, menotropins) is not a single molecule: it is a purified preparation containing two hormones, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), traditionally extracted from urine. Both are FDA-approved active ingredients; the HCG sold here is a research reagent.
Does HCG need to be refrigerated?
Lyophilized HCG keeps best refrigerated at 2–8 °C, or frozen for long-term storage, though follow the instructions on the vial label and Certificate of Analysis. Once reconstituted, it must be kept refrigerated and protected from light, and not shaken, since agitation and freeze-thaw cycles can make the glycoprotein subunits aggregate or separate.
What are the identifiers for HCG?
HCG: molecular weight ~36,700 Da (heterodimer; varies with glycosylation); CAS number 9002-61-3. Match these identifiers against the Certificate of Analysis for the lot.
Does HCG come with a Certificate of Analysis?
Yes. Each lot has its own Certificate of Analysis, linked on this page for the current lot of each size: 5000iu (99.1% HPLC purity); 10000iu (98.72% HPLC purity). Past certificates are archived in the COA library; contact us with the lot number on the vial label if a certificate is missing.
What purity is HCG?
98.72% (HPLC, current lot). Purity is measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and reported on the lot's Certificate of Analysis.
What sizes of HCG are available?
HCG is supplied as lyophilized powder in a sealed vial in 2 sizes: 5000iu, 10000iu. In stock and dispatched in 1–2 business days. Quantity pricing applies automatically at 5+ and 10+ vials of the same size.
How should HCG be stored?
Store sealed at −20 °C, dry and protected from light.
