Glutathione FAQ

Is it a peptide? Glutathione, explained

Yes. Glutathione is a tripeptide made of glutamate, cysteine and glycine (γ-L-glutamyl-L-cysteinyl-glycine). It is unusual because glutamate is linked through its side-chain (gamma) carboxyl group rather than the usual backbone bond. It is the most abundant low-molecular-weight thiol in cells and a standard antioxidant in biochemistry research.

Glutathione vs. NAD+

They are different molecules with different roles. Glutathione is a tripeptide (γ-glutamyl-cysteinyl-glycine) and the main low-molecular-weight thiol antioxidant in cells. NAD+ is a dinucleotide coenzyme that carries electrons in redox reactions and serves as a substrate for sirtuins and PARPs. Only glutathione is a peptide.

Is glutathione in the KLOW blend?

No. The composition commonly called KLOW contains four peptides: BPC-157, TB-500, GHK-Cu and KPV. Glutathione is a separate tripeptide (γ-Glu-Cys-Gly) and is not part of it, nor of the three-peptide BPC-157 + TB-500 + GHK-Cu blend. We sell glutathione as its own product.

GHK-Cu vs. glutathione

Both are tripeptides, but they differ in sequence and chemistry. GHK-Cu is Gly-His-Lys bound to a copper(II) ion, which makes it blue. Glutathione is γ-Glu-Cys-Gly, with an unusual gamma peptide bond and a free thiol group that makes it the main redox buffer in cells; it is a white powder. GHK-Cu research centers on copper transport and the extracellular matrix, glutathione research on redox biochemistry.

KPV vs. glutathione

Both are tripeptides but have nothing else in common. KPV (Lys-Pro-Val) is a fragment of α-MSH studied in inflammation models. Glutathione (γ-Glu-Cys-Gly) is made in nearly all cells, has an unusual gamma peptide bond and a free thiol group, and is studied in redox biochemistry.

What is glutathione?

Glutathione is a tripeptide, γ-L-glutamyl-L-cysteinyl-glycine, with a molecular weight of about 307.3 Da. It is made in nearly all animal cells and is the most abundant low-molecular-weight thiol in them. In its reduced form (GSH) the cysteine carries a free thiol; two molecules joined by a disulfide bond form oxidized glutathione (GSSG). Products sold as "glutathione peptide" are usually reduced L-glutathione.

What has glutathione been studied for in research?

Glutathione is one of the most studied molecules in redox biochemistry. Research in cells, tissues and animals examines its role as the main cellular thiol buffer, as a cofactor for glutathione peroxidases and glutathione S-transferases, and the ratio of reduced to oxidized glutathione as a marker of oxidative stress. It is also a routine laboratory reagent, for example in GST-tag affinity purification and protein-refolding buffers. Findings in cells or animals do not establish effects in people.

Is glutathione FDA approved?

No. Glutathione is not an FDA-approved drug. It is a naturally occurring molecule found in nearly every cell, but that does not make any product containing it an approved medicine. The material sold here is a research reagent for laboratory use only, not a medicine or a supplement.

Does glutathione need to be refrigerated?

For long-term storage, yes. Keep the powder sealed, dry and refrigerated at 2–8 °C, or frozen at −20 °C. In solution, reduced glutathione slowly oxidizes to GSSG on exposure to air, faster at neutral or alkaline pH and in the presence of trace metal ions. Solutions are therefore best prepared fresh, kept refrigerated, or frozen in single-use aliquots.

How do you reconstitute glutathione in the lab?

Glutathione is highly water-soluble, and its solutions are acidic. Let the sealed vial reach room temperature, add a sterile diluent slowly down the inside wall of the vial, and swirl gently until dissolved. The concentration is the labeled mass divided by the volume added. Because the thiol oxidizes in solution, prepare it close to the time of the experiment and keep it refrigerated.

Glutathione vs. NAC

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is a single modified amino acid: cysteine with an acetyl group on its nitrogen. Glutathione is a tripeptide of glutamate, cysteine and glycine. Both carry a free thiol group. In cell biochemistry NAC is used as a source of cysteine, the amino acid that usually limits how fast cells make glutathione. We sell glutathione, not NAC.

Epithalon vs. glutathione

They are different peptides. Epithalon is a synthetic tetrapeptide (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) developed in Russia from research on a pineal-gland extract and studied in aging research. Glutathione is a naturally occurring tripeptide with an unusual gamma peptide bond and a free thiol group, studied in redox biochemistry. Epithalon contains no cysteine and has no thiol group.

What are the identifiers for Glutathione?

Glutathione: molecular formula C10H17N3O6S; molecular weight 307.32 g/mol; CAS number 70-18-8. Sequence: gamma-Glu-Cys-Gly. Match these identifiers against the Certificate of Analysis for the lot.

Does Glutathione come with a Certificate of Analysis?

Yes. Each lot has its own Certificate of Analysis, linked on this page for the current lot of each size: 1500mg (99.95% HPLC purity). Past certificates are archived in the COA library; contact us with the lot number on the vial label if a certificate is missing.

What purity is Glutathione?

99.95% (HPLC, current lot). Purity is measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and reported on the lot's Certificate of Analysis.

What sizes of Glutathione are available?

Glutathione is supplied as lyophilized powder in a sealed vial: 1500mg. In stock and dispatched in 1–2 business days. Quantity pricing applies automatically at 5+ and 10+ vials of the same size.

How should Glutathione be stored?

Store sealed at −20 °C, dry and protected from light.
