Semaglutide FAQ

What is semaglutide?

Semaglutide is a 31-amino-acid analogue of human glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), developed by Novo Nordisk. Two substitutions (Aib8 and Arg34) and a C18 fatty diacid on Lys26 protect it from enzymatic breakdown and bind it to albumin. It is an FDA-approved active ingredient; the material sold here is a research reagent, not a medicine.

Is semaglutide a peptide?

Yes. Semaglutide is an acylated peptide: a 31-amino-acid chain based on GLP-1 with a fatty-acid side chain attached through a linker.

Tirzepatide vs. semaglutide

Semaglutide is a 31-amino-acid analogue of GLP-1 that activates the GLP-1 receptor only. Tirzepatide is a 39-amino-acid peptide built on the GIP sequence that activates both the GIP and GLP-1 receptors. Both carry a fatty diacid side chain that binds albumin and extends their persistence in research systems: C18 on semaglutide's Lys26, C20 on tirzepatide's Lys20.

Semaglutide vs. tirzepatide vs. retatrutide

All three are fatty-acid-modified synthetic peptides studied in incretin research, and they differ mainly in receptor targets. Semaglutide (Novo Nordisk) activates the GLP-1 receptor only. Tirzepatide (Eli Lilly) activates the GIP and GLP-1 receptors. Retatrutide (Eli Lilly) activates the GIP, GLP-1 and glucagon receptors. Semaglutide and tirzepatide are FDA-approved active ingredients; retatrutide is investigational and not FDA approved as of October 2026. All three are sold here as research reagents.

What has semaglutide been studied for in research?

Semaglutide has been studied in cell and rodent models of GLP-1 receptor signaling, and Novo Nordisk ran extensive clinical-trial programs in people with type 2 diabetes, people with obesity, and people with cardiovascular disease. It is an FDA-approved active ingredient and is also widely used as a reference GLP-1 receptor agonist in laboratory research. Findings in cells or animals do not establish effects in people. The material sold here is a research reagent.

Is semaglutide FDA approved?

Yes, as the active ingredient of several prescription medicines; the FDA first approved semaglutide in 2017. That FDA approval covers finished medicines made under pharmaceutical manufacturing controls. The semaglutide sold here is a laboratory research reagent, not a medicine, and is not for human or veterinary use.

Is semaglutide a GLP-1?

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist: a modified version of human glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). It shares 94% of its sequence with native GLP-1(7–37), but two amino-acid changes (Aib8 and Arg34) and a fatty diacid side chain on Lys26 make it far more resistant to enzymatic breakdown than the natural hormone. It acts on the GLP-1 receptor only.

What is semaglutide made of?

Semaglutide is a 31-amino-acid peptide chain based on GLP-1, with α-aminoisobutyric acid (Aib) at position 8 and arginine at position 34. Lysine 26 carries a side chain made of two short ethylene-glycol amino-acid spacers, a γ-glutamic acid and an 18-carbon fatty diacid. In pharmaceutical manufacturing the peptide backbone is expressed in yeast and then chemically acylated; research material can also be made by chemical synthesis. The Certificate of Analysis confirms each lot's identity.

Does semaglutide expire?

Yes. Like any peptide, semaglutide slowly degrades through oxidation, hydrolysis and aggregation. Kept sealed, dry and cold (2–8 °C, or −20 °C for long-term storage), lyophilized material stays stable far longer than a reconstituted solution, which should be kept refrigerated and used within weeks. Check the vial label and Certificate of Analysis for storage guidance and dates.

How do you pronounce semaglutide?

Semaglutide is usually pronounced "sem-uh-GLOO-tide". The "-glutide" ending is the international nonproprietary name stem for GLP-1 analogues and appears in other GLP-1 analogue names such as liraglutide and dulaglutide. The "sema-" prefix is simply a distinguishing syllable chosen when the name was assigned to Novo Nordisk's compound.

Is MOTS-c a GLP-1?

No. MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid mitochondrial-derived peptide and has no sequence relationship to GLP-1. It is studied in connection with the AMPK pathway rather than incretin receptors. Retatrutide, tirzepatide and semaglutide, by contrast, are fatty-acid-modified peptides designed to activate the GLP-1 receptor (and, for the first two, the GIP and, for retatrutide, glucagon receptors).

Adipotide vs. retatrutide

They are entirely different designs. Adipotide is a peptidomimetic built to bind prohibitin on blood vessels of white adipose tissue and carry a membrane-disrupting D-amino-acid sequence. Retatrutide, like tirzepatide and semaglutide, is a fatty-acid-modified incretin receptor agonist that activates hormone receptors (GIP, GLP-1 and glucagon for retatrutide). Adipotide does not act on these receptors.

Is tesamorelin or ipamorelin a GLP-1?

No. GLP-1 receptor agonists such as semaglutide act on the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor. Tesamorelin acts on the GHRH receptor, and ipamorelin acts on the ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a). They are unrelated in sequence and target, although all three are peptides and are sometimes discussed together online.

What are the identifiers for Semaglutide?

Semaglutide: molecular formula C187H291N45O59; molecular weight 4113.6 g/mol; CAS number 910463-68-2. Sequence: HXEGTFTSDVSSYLEGQAAKEFIAWLVRGRG (X = Aib at position 2 of the analogue, corresponding to position 8 of GLP-1; Lys26 acylated with a C18 fatty diacid via gamma-Glu-2xAEEA linker). Match these identifiers against the Certificate of Analysis for the lot.

Does Semaglutide come with a Certificate of Analysis?

Yes. Each lot has its own Certificate of Analysis, linked on this page for the current lot of each size: 5mg (98.65% HPLC purity); 20mg (98.69% HPLC purity); 50mg (99.46% HPLC purity). Past certificates are archived in the COA library; contact us with the lot number on the vial label if a certificate is missing.

What purity is Semaglutide?

98.65% (HPLC, current lot). Purity is measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and reported on the lot's Certificate of Analysis.

What sizes of Semaglutide are available?

Semaglutide is supplied as lyophilized powder in a sealed vial in 3 sizes: 5mg, 20mg, 50mg. In stock and dispatched in 1–2 business days. Quantity pricing applies automatically at 5+ and 10+ vials of the same size.

How should Semaglutide be stored?

Store sealed at −20 °C, dry and protected from light.
