What Does “Research Use Only” Mean?

Research Use Only (RUO) means a material is supplied for laboratory research and nothing else. An RUO product is not a drug, dietary supplement, cosmetic or diagnostic, has not been reviewed or approved by the FDA for any use in people or animals, and must not be administered to humans or animals.

Every product sold by USA Prime Peptides is RUO. This guide explains where the label comes from, what it does and does not mean, and why it matters when you read anything about peptides online.

The wording originates in U.S. federal labeling rules for in-vitro diagnostic products. Under 21 CFR 809.10(c), a product in the laboratory research phase of development must carry the statement “For Research Use Only. Not for use in diagnostic procedures.” The FDA's guidance on distribution of products labeled Research Use Only makes clear that the label must reflect how a product is actually intended and marketed, not just what is printed on the vial.

Research-chemical suppliers use the same designation to state that their materials are sold only for in-vitro and laboratory work. Our own labeling and sales terms are set out in our Research Use Only policy.

It is not an approval. An RUO label says nothing about safety or effectiveness. Many compounds sold for research have never been tested in controlled human trials; the ones that share a molecule with an approved drug (for example, a GLP-1 receptor agonist) are still not the approved drug product, which is made, tested and released under drug manufacturing rules.

It is not a quality grade. RUO describes intended use, not purity. Quality is shown by testing: a lot-specific Certificate of Analysis with HPLC purity, mass-spectrometry identity and endotoxin results. Our testing and documentation process explains what we publish for every lot.

It is not a loophole. A seller that labels a product RUO while giving dosing instructions, promoting it for human use or making health claims is contradicting its own label. That is why we provide no dosing, administration or protocol guidance of any kind.
